Their construction skills have enabled the building of a damwhich has given them a lake so they can safely swim and forage in the nearby woodland. Rather than bursting out of the starting line with this simple but profound advice, she leads readers to the bottom line by way of a multitude of colorful passages that you won't want to miss. The naked mole-rat is a burrower that, like bees and ants but unlike any other mammal, lives colonially with castes of individuals. They have a different alarm call for each enemy and Attenborough demonstrates this by placing a stuffed leopard nearby. For this it climbs to the highest point nearby, which in this instance proves to be Attenborough's shoulder.

Sloths and coatis exemplify the skills needed to move around in such a habitat. Different tamarin species are shown co-operating to alert each other to the presence of a common predator, a tayra. When the world's climate changed 10 million years ago, some monkeys ventured into open grassland, and they are illustrated by some of the most resourceful: baboons and geladas. Steve participates on and indigenous hunt where he comes across a howler monkey. Left unacknowledged it traps both groups in social interactions that can be painful and upsetting: conversations that become arguments; interactions that become confrontations; meals that exclude vegetarians; friends who sabotage them; nonvegetarian lovers who alienate them. A herd of buffalo are shown defending one of their number by charging the lions attacking it.

Laughs abound as Steve initiates Joe and Brian into some serious Alaskan backpack hunting. Imagine that this milestone is, like those, an opportunity to widen our perspective on the world, encounter new, interesting people and ideas, develop new skills, and share what we learn to help others. Filled with more than kitchen shortcuts, strategies and simple solutions, the book is intended for people who want to eat well, but who: Think it takes too much time to prepare meals at home; Are cutting back on meat and don't know what to serve; Do not like following recipes. It deserves a place in every vegan library and on the reading list of every non-vegan. Giant felines threaten the story but Steve stays on course and articulates why solo time in trophy country is good for the soul. Broken up into ten chapters, each chapter finishes with some journal questions for reflection and some suggested practical challenges.

If more people on either side of the debate took the time to educate themselves on another point of view, there would be more respect for those with a meat-based diet as well as their plant-based diet counterparts.

I call upon us to cherish all bodies--whether our own or those of other animals--and to honor our best impulses to live consciously on this planet. However, the most successful group of mammals are the placentals. Rigid ideals and labels lock us into non-acceptance of what is.
